The problem is that a growing body of research suggests those numbers may be telling you a story that is only partially true.

Fitbit and Apple Watch are two of the most widely used sleep trackers on the market, but recent studies and user complaints are raising serious questions about how accurately these devices actually measure what happens when you close your eyes. If you have ever stared at your sleep data wondering why you feel exhausted despite the app claiming you slept well, there is a real explanation for that disconnect.
The Algorithm Problem Nobody Warned You About
Fitbit recently pushed an update to its sleep-tracking algorithm, specifically for devices like the Charge 6, with the stated goal of improving accuracy. The update was designed to better account for moments when you are awake during the night, which in theory should give you a more honest picture of your actual sleep.
In practice, users quickly reported the opposite effect. The updated algorithm became significantly more sensitive to movement and wakefulness, which led to the devices logging shorter sleep durations than what people actually experienced. Someone who genuinely slept seven hours might now see six hours or less on their dashboard, not because they slept less, but because the algorithm is now flagging more brief awakenings that previously went unrecorded.
This is a fundamental tension in consumer sleep tracking: sensitivity and accuracy are not the same thing. A device can become better at detecting when you are technically awake while simultaneously giving you a less useful overall picture of your night.
What These Devices Actually Cannot Measure
The deeper issue goes beyond algorithm tweaks. Researchers from Duke University and the Mayo Clinic published a review in the journal Sleep Medicine that cuts to the heart of the problem. Their conclusion is worth sitting with: wrist-worn trackers like Fitbit and Apple Watch can reasonably estimate how long you slept, but they struggle significantly to capture how well you slept.
Specifically, these devices cannot reliably tell you why you woke up feeling terrible after what the app claims was a solid night. Sleep satisfaction, next-day fatigue, and how refreshed you actually feel are not things an accelerometer on your wrist can measure. The devices are essentially inferring sleep stages from wrist movement and heart rate, not directly reading your brain activity the way a clinical sleep study would.
For generally healthy people using a tracker for broad wellness awareness, this is probably fine. The data is imperfect but directionally useful. For anyone dealing with insomnia, sleep apnea, or other sleep disturbances, the researchers found that the agreement between wearable data and clinical measurements was poor enough that the devices could actually mislead rather than inform.
How Apple Watch Compares to Fitbit
A study conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital put the Apple Watch, Fitbit Sense, and Oura Ring side by side against polysomnography, which is the gold-standard clinical sleep test that measures brain waves, eye movement, and muscle activity directly. The results were instructive.
Both the Apple Watch and Fitbit showed meaningful limitations in four-stage sleep classification, meaning their ability to correctly identify light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep, and wakefulness was imperfect compared to the clinical standard. The Apple Watch had a specific tendency to overestimate certain sleep metrics, while Fitbit lagged in overall classification accuracy.
The Oura Ring outperformed both, coming in roughly 5% more accurate than the Apple Watch and 10% more accurate than Fitbit in that four-stage classification. Its wake detection sensitivity sat at 68.6% and deep sleep detection at 79.5%, both higher than the other two devices. Worth noting: that study was funded by Oura, so the results should be read with that context in mind, even if the research itself was conducted by an independent hospital.
What You Should Actually Do With This Information
None of this means you should throw your tracker out. It means you should use it differently.
Treat trends, not individual nights, as meaningful. A single night’s data from a Fitbit or Apple Watch is not a reliable clinical measurement. But looking at your sleep patterns over weeks or months can reveal real patterns, like consistently shorter sleep on certain days or a gradual shift in your sleep schedule.
Do not let the app override how you actually feel. If your tracker says you slept well but you feel wrecked, trust your body. The device does not have access to your subjective experience, and the research confirms that gap is real.
Be cautious about using wearable data for medical decisions. If you are concerned about a sleep disorder, a wearable tracker is not a substitute for talking to a doctor or getting a proper sleep study. The data can be a useful conversation starter, but it should not be the basis for self-diagnosing or avoiding professional evaluation.
Check for recent app updates. If your Fitbit recently started logging noticeably shorter sleep durations, the algorithm update may be the cause. This is worth knowing before you assume your sleep has actually gotten worse.
The technology is improving, and future generations of these devices will almost certainly do better. But right now, there is a real gap between what sleep tracker marketing promises and what the science confirms these devices can deliver. Knowing that gap exists is the most useful thing your sleep data can tell you.
