Have you noticed that recent earthquakes have been more often, maybe because of too many shifts in the earth’s crust, who knows? Sometimes if the earthquakes are minor, we don’t feel tremors, but it’s better to be prepared. Keeping this in mind Apple had released a feature that gives you a warning about earthquakes directly on your iPhone devices. These tremor alerts give you precious seconds to take protective action before major shaking hits your area. But to use it? Don’t worry, I am going to show you how to activate the tremor alert on your iPhone.

Local governments in some earthquake-prone regions have deployed early warning systems that integrate with iPhones. In the U.S., this includes ShakeAlert and Wireless Emergency Alerts.

How to Activate the Tremor Alert on iPhone?

AMBER alerts, emergency notifications, and public safety messages will be pushed to your iPhone. Earthquake warnings may be included when applicable.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Notifications.
  2. Scroll down and tap Government Alerts.
  3. Toggle on Emergency Alerts and/or Public Safety Alerts.
  4. If available in your region, toggle on Earthquake Alerts.
  5. If you live in California, Oregon, or Japan, you can also enable earthquake alerts by toggling on Earthquake Alerts.

This will allow any government-issued earthquake warnings to be pushed as emergency notifications. You will receive notice of earthquakes with a magnitude 5.0 or higher and seismic intensity 4 (on the Mercalli scale in California) or 5-/5 lower (on Shindo scale in Japan).

You can even customize it as per your own needs:

  • You can set the alert threshold based on magnitude, intensity scale, or expected shaking.
  • You will have the option to choose the delivery methods like push notifications, text alerts, or audio alarms.
  • Designate emergency contacts who will also receive the alerts that can be customized by you.
  • Disable amber alerts or non earthquake notifications if too frequent by going to the settings app.
  • Opt to only receive nighttime alerts if you are concerned about getting disturbed while working.
  • You may even limit location access and alerts to only important apps to save your battery life.

Third-Party app for tremor alert:

If you want to opt for third-party app if you want. There are several apps available on the App Store can send earthquake alerts based on data from government sensors or crowd-sourced reports. Popular options include MyShake, QuakeAlertUSA, and Early Warning.

  1. Open the app store on your iPhone.
  2. In the search bar type MyShake.
  3. Click on the get button.
  4. Once downloaded, open the application.
  5. Accept its terms and conditions.
  6. Enable the notification in order for the ap to function.

That’s it, folks! This is how you can activate tremor alerts without any hassle. Note that earthquake alerts are only available in certain areas, such as California, Oregon, and Japan. If you live in one of these areas, you can receive alerts for earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher and seismic intensity of 4 (on Mercalli scale in California) or 5-/5 lower (on the Shindo scale in Japan). If you do not live in these areas, you can still receive alerts through the MyShake app.
