What are interactive widgets on iOS 17?

Interactive widgets are the latest innovative feature brought to life in iOS 17. This essentially means that you can now play/pause your music, control home accessories, mark a reminder complete, all right from the home screen.

Interactive widgets let you quickly view information or perform quick actions without opening an app. For example, the calendar widget shows your upcoming events and lets you add new ones.Many Apple apps like Weather, Maps, and Music have interactive widgets. Third party apps may also support interactive widgets.

Types of interactive widgets in iOS 17:

  • Home app widgets allow you to control HomeKit accessories directly from the Home Screen. It is available in 2×2 and larger sizes for up to 8 accessories.
  • Calendar widgets display upcoming events and allow adding new events or marking them as completed.
  • Media control widgets let you play, pause, skip music or podcasts without opening the apps.
  • Reminder’s widgets enable marking reminders as complete or adding new ones.
  • Weather widgets likely provide realtime weather info and access to additional weather features.

How to use interactive widgets in iOS 17?

  1. Begin with a longpress on a free area of your home screen until the app icons and existing widgets start to wobble.
  2. Tap on the plus + icon you’ll see appearing in the topleft of your screen.
  3. Scroll through the available widgets and choose one that supports interactivity.
  4. Tap on add widget to bring it to your home screen.
  5. Now, you can play with the widget by pressing the buttons or toggling switches.

In Settings, enable Smart Rotate to automatically go landscape when using large widget spreads. The Widget Gallery also lets you customize widget appearances, transparency and more.

But remember, not all widgets support this interactive feature, so when scrolling through the list, ensure you pick one that does. Also, keep in mind that as iOS 17 is still in beta, this feature might not be available to all just yet.
