Apple’s iOS 17 is one of the most highly anticipated updated to iPhone operating system. iOS 17 brings many major changes such as lock screen customizations, new updates and features in message app, maps, wallet, health app, etc. Before the official update, we will receive iOS 17 golden master update which marks the final round of testing phase. But when will the golden master update be available to download? Let’s take a look!
What is iOS 17 golden master?
The Golden Master also known as GM is the final version of iOS that is provided to developers and public beta testers before the software is released to the general public. It is the last beta version before the official public launch.The iOS 17 Golden Master is Apple’s way of signalling that iOS 17 is nearly complete and will soon be released widely. While not guaranteed, the GM build usually ends up being the exact same version released to all users.
When is the iOS 17 Golden Master Release Date?
Apple has announced that iOS 17will become available to the public on September 18, 2023.This means the iOS 17 Golden Master will also likely appear on September 18, 2023 for developers and public beta testers.The iOS 17 public beta first became available on July 12, 2023. The beta testing period has lasted over two months, allowing testers to try out the software and provide Apple with feedback.Now, the testing period is nearly over and the iOS 17 GM will arrive right before the full launch.
How to Download the iOS 17 Golden Master
The iOS 17 Golden Master will only be available to developers and public beta testers. It can’t be downloaded by regular users who haven’t enrolled in one of these programs.
If you’re a developer:
- Make sure you are enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. This requires an annual $99 fee.
- Go to the Apple Developer Center on your Mac or PC and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Click on Downloads in the sidebar.
- Find the iOS 17 Golden Master download. (It will be listed once available on September 18th.)
- Click Download and the GM IPSW file will download to your computer.
- Connect your compatible iPhone to the computer via a USB cable.
- Open Finder on your Mac or iTunes on your Windows PC.
- While holding the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows), click on Check for Update or Download and Update.
- Navigate to and select the iOS 17 GM IPSW file you downloaded.
- Follow the prompts to install the iOS 17 GM on your iPhone.
If you’re a public beta tester:
- Sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program. It is free to enroll.
- Download and install the beta profile on your iPhone. This allows your device to receive beta updates.
- Once the GM is released on Sept 18, you can update to it through the Settings app, under General > Software Update.
If you aren’t already in the developer or public beta program, you will have to wait until the public iOS 17 launch on September 18, 2023 to upgrade.
The iOS 17 GM and the version publicly released on Sept 18 will be nearly identical. By testing the GM build ahead of time, developers help squash last minute bugs.
