iOS 17 Bump Feature: What It Is And How To Use It

mm

Apple introduced a new “bump” feature in iOS 17 called NameDrop. Similar to the popular Bump app from years ago, NameDrop allows iPhone users to quickly share contact information by bringing their devices close together. Here’s what you need to know about using NameDrop.

What is NameDrop?

NameDrop uses the iOS AirDrop protocol to transfer data between two iPhones when they are brought near each other. By lightly “bumping” the top edges of both devices, a popup appears allowing users to share or receive contact info.

In addition to contacts, NameDrop enables quick sharing of other content like photos, documents, and more. You can also use it for streaming media or playing multiplayer games with the person you are bumping devices with.

How To Use NameDrop

Using NameDrop to share contacts with another iPhone user only takes a few seconds:

  1. Hold your phone near the other person’s phone so the top edges are close to each other, almost touching. You’ll feel a little vibration and hear a clicking sound when the connection is established.
  2. A popup will appear on both screens, allowing both users to choose “Share” to send their own contact info to the other device, “Receive Only” to only get the other person’s contact card, or “Done” if you want to cancel.

If both users select Share, the contact cards are exchanged and saved in the respective Contacts apps automatically.

How To Disable NameDrop

If you don’t want to use the NameDrop feature for contact sharing, you can disable it in your Settings:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap General.
  2. Choose AirDrop.
  3. Next to “Start Sharing By”, turn off the switch for “Bring Devices Together”.

With NameDrop enabled in iOS 17, iPhone users can once again “bump” their devices to quickly exchange contact details and other content. While simple, it brings back some nostalgia from the original Bump app era.
