If you are constantly on your iPhone, and have a prolonged screen time than this feature is for you as it reduces eye strain. Apple has always set the stage on fire with its innovation and new set of features. During the WWDC 2023 even apple had announced the new screen distance feature that will help user experience enhancements and see a drastic change. Why you should at least consider this feature, will its important for your eye health and the optimization.

What Is the Screen Distance Feature in iOS 17?

As you may know that prolonged exposure to screens can lead to various eye issues such as eye dryness or myopia, or near-sightedness, are a concern for many. iOS 17 addresses this with its innovative Screen Distance feature. This function acts as a protector to your eyes giving warning to users to maintain a safe distance from their iPhone or iPad screens.

This feature uses the advanced TrueDepth camera system, specifically Face ID, iOS 17 measures the distance between your eyes and the device. Notably, this process only involves distance measurement, ensuring user privacy with no photos or videos captured.

How Does Screen Distance Work?

Understanding the technology behind Screen Distance is not rocket science. By holding your iPhone or iPad closer than 12 inches for extended periods, you risk myopia. iOS 17’s Screen Distance detects this proximity and sends timely notifications, reminding you to maintain a safe viewing distance. Supported by iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd-gen and later) and iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd-gen and later) with TrueDepth camera systems, this feature is available on all iPhones running iOS 17.

How to use Screen Distance in iOS 17?

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to the Screen Time menu.
  2. Locate the Screen Distance option within the menu and tap on it.
  3. A welcome screen will appear. Tap on Continue to proceed.
  4. On the subsequent page, toggle on the Screen Distancefeature.
  5. With Screen Distance enabled, your iPhone or iPad will alert you when held too close, ensuring optimal viewing distance.

If you are worried that your iPhone wont support this feature then let me tell you, if your iPhone is compatible with iOS 17, and has TrueDepth camera system then it will have screen distance feature.

Apple has confirmed that the Screen Distance feature, in addition to the newly launched iPhone 15 and 15 Plus and the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, will also be available on the iPhone X series, the iPhone 11 series, iPhone 12 and 13 series, as well as the iPhone 14 series.
