When you’re in an area with 5G service for your carrier and your 5G cellular plan is enabled, you’ll see a 5G icon in your iPhone’s status bar.

What is the difference between 5G Auto and 5G on:

When you are using 5G Auto, your device goes into smart data mode. It will automatically switch to a 4G network when the 5G network fluctuates or gives you less speed. This might help you save battery life a little.

When you are using 5G On, it will always use the 5G network and will not shift to the 4G network automatically even when the 5G network is low. This will also reduce battery life.
