Don’t have a network but need to make a phone call? Don’t worry about it, even if you don’t have a mobile phone service, you may still use your iPhone to make calls and send texts. You may be wondering how is that possible. Well, it is quite simple actually. You just need a Wi-Fi connection, that’s all.
When you use Wi-Fi calling, your calls and texts are sent through the Wi-Fi network to which your iPhone is connected to rather than the cellular network of your carrier. It’s alright if you don’t have network coverage; all you need is a decent Wi-Fi connection; without Wi-Fi, you won’t be able to utilize this function.
What is Wi-Fi calling?
Wi-Fi calling makes phone calls over the internet using your Wi-Fi connection rather than your cellular carrier’s network of cell towers. Wi-Fi calling is ideal for those who make frequent international calls, because there is usually no roaming or international charge for making calls or texting back home through Wi-Fi.
When you enable Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone, it will switch from your cellular network to Wi-Fi anytime you connect to a Wi-Fi network. But keep in mind that if you lose the Wi-Fi signal, your call will immediately transfer back to your cellular network. If you notice the phrase “Wi-Fi” instead of “Mobile” next to your carrier’s name in the top-left corner of your lock screen, you’re using Wi-Fi calling. Wi-Fi calling is supported on mostly all the devices, the iPhone 5 and subsequent generations.

It should be noted, however, that certain public Wi-Fi networks may demand an access fee to join to their network. Furthermore, several providers’ plans include free calls to Canada and Mexico. However, keep in mind that you will be charged an international rate dependent on your location. Wi-Fi calling is also not available in other countries, including China, Cuba, and North Korea.
